Applying Sun Tzu's Art of War to Chinese Acupuncture
The development of acupuncture has been documented to date back to the Warring States (476-221 BCE) as its medical corpus, the NeiJing, contains philosophical assertions from a number of dominating schools of thoughts that prevailed during this formative period of the Chinese mind.

Given the conflicts that ensued among warring principalities, military strategies emerged with notable treatises such as Sun Zi Bing Fa (commonly referred to as Sun Zi’s Art of War) by Sun Wu of the 5th century BCE and arguably one of the texts that could have also influenced the NeiJing.

Organized into 13 chapters, the first chapter articulates the 5 shi-affairs that one needs to consider for success in conflict – heaven, earth, commander, way-morality, and method-logistics – all of which can be applied to a clinician’s treatment. Articulating success through strategic foresight and timing (wood), imagination and deception (fire), clear understanding of oneself and the enemy-pathogen (earth), strengths and weaknesses (metal), and adaptability (water), Sun’s work has been applied to the military, sports, politics, business, personal life, and medicine.

This seminar offers a primer on the application of Sun Zi’s teachings in acupuncture and healing.Available both online and in-person
