Today in history Territorial Government Comes to New Mexico on Sept. 9, 1850. President Millard Fillmore signs legislation that admits New Mexico into the Union as a territory and allows for formation of a Territorial government.

Under the Compromise of 1850, Texas relinquishes its claims to New Mexico, and the federal government assumes $10 million of Texas debt.
