The ‘Drive In’ is back! A time old classic, that had essentially died off, is not only American culture but car but movie culture as well.
What was a once an American, time cherished, summer tradition of going to see a flick on the silver screen, outside in the comfort of your car surrounded by family and friends.
2020 has been allowing the worst and best of American history to repeat itself with the return of a covid conscious attempt at uniting people during this time of separation, the good American Drive In!
The ‘Drive In’ is Back!
Cheers and crowd participation at last night screening of the 80’s classic ‘Dirty Dancing’ starring the late Patrick Swayze, was a sure sign that the people of Santa Fe (and surrounding area) highly approve.
Motorama at the Downs at Santa Fe property is the cities latest pop up incarnation of a drive- in movie theater. Utilizing the north end of the center lawn of the former horse track.
A towering stack of empty train cars attached with a massive movie screen attached sets the stage for countless rows of movie goers.
Show up early to set up a small camp with a large thick blanket to lay on along with a number of other blankets for each member of our small party, along with a pillows. snack packs, cut fruit and veggies, bags of popcorn, flavored soda waters and of course…CANDY!
1st we feasted. Croissant sandwiches and chips, and some caramels for dessert. A few cars over 2 ladies has a full on Opera table and chairs set up with a full table cloth and candle, they were being bougie.
None the less, a great time was had by all, everyone around was respectful considering the ample spacing.
Each spot has room for the vehicle (and if you can stay to the same side as the entire isle, then those in the back have a clear shot) and basically another car space to “camp out”.
Speaking of camping out, after our “dinner” and by the time the movie started a nearly full moon was on the rise creating the most dynamic back drop to this pop up drive in.
All in all, this was a perfect experience with loved ones and I hope to see this concept come back to life, even if by pop up, next year when it starts to warm till it gets too cold. Your family will have a blast, our did!
Make sure to dress warm and bring blankets!
