sfoCarmen is the hash tag you need when you go see the world’s most famous opera at the world famous Santa Fe Opera House. This years production of Carmen is off the hook and aiming towards a younger opera goer and pop culture enthusiast. Inspired by Breaking Bad and Amy Winehouse, all I can say is that this isn’t your mama’s version of Carmen. This modern production is extraordinary and while Carmen is not the first opera to present an underclass, it is the first to do so with all its amorality, violent criminality and mordant humor.” As director Stephan Lawless points out, given the original setting – the contraband in those cartons stashed at Lillas Pastia’s smoky, boozy hideout might have been sherry or lace. This time around, the illicit trade is all too familiar….DRUGS!
CARMEN is changing the game on how opera is delivered in all aspects from the use of projections and holograms to creative lighting and setting to the story line that resinates with a younger crowd, including a new hash tag #sfoCarmen to connect this new breed of opera goers via social media. Make sure you come and see this great production and be ready for a surprise!
Here is video I took with the great Stephen Lawless (Director, Carmen) talking about getting the call to direct Carmen and he also explains his inspiration for this production.
