The Santa Fe Council on International Relations (CIR) brought a mayor, regional legislator, and economic development officials from the Republic of Moldova (who are being sponsored by the State Department’s International Visitors Leadership Program) this morning to meet Mayor Javier M. Gonzales and City Manager Brian K. Snyder. A State Department Russian language interpreter was also present.
Moldova is a former part of the Soviet Union, now an independent country, and these leaders are visiting several American cities to learn about local and state government. Specifically, the program objectives for these visitors are:
• To introduce the structures and functions of the U.S. federalist system of government, with emphasis on the division of authority and responsibility between federal, state and local governments;
• To demonstrate successful models of cooperation among state and local governments, non-governmental organizations, community organizations, and the business sector; and
• To explain how local and state governments function in the U.S. and how they interact with the federal government.
