One of my favorite things about the holidays is being out in public and seeing everyone I know with their family or friends having a joyous time on the Plaza or Canyon Road. As we all know, it’s the holiday tree lighting event that kicks off the holidays during Thanksgiving weekend. Here are all the details for this years holiday tree lighting event.
HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING EVENT 2015
The Holiday Tree Lighting Event Festivities start around 5 p.m. with the Girl Scout Choir and Girl Scouts selling cookies and hot chocolate.
Santa and Mrs. Claus’s appearance around 4 p.m. is executed in true Santa Fe style. The Clauses are transported to the Plaza on a vintage fire truck, which heralds their arrival with its siren sounding.
Volunteers begin lighting 1,000 farolitos around 4:30 p.m., which will illuminate the Plaza until the main event at 6 p.m., presided over by the Mayor, city councilors and other dignitaries. Then the crowd counts down to illuminate every light in unison.
