Recently, the Public Regulations Commission and the Pipeline Safety Bureau recognized PNM employee Brian Mitchener with the “Doug Weber Line Locator of the Year Award” for his work in the Damage Prevention department at PNM. The award acknowledges Brian’s commitment to safety and his outstanding work and attention to detail when implementing line location protocols.
Brian Mitchener has been line locating for 23 years, seven of which have been with PNM. From 2017 through 2018 he completed 11,004 locate requests with an accuracy of 100%, which means that the lines were correctly located and marked every time he completed a job, resulting in an outstanding record of zero damages. Brian was nominated for consideration for this award by his supervisor, Carlos Arras, craft supervisor for the Damage Prevention department.
“Brian has a sincere dedication to safety and customer service, and this award is very well deserved,” said Carlos. “He has a lot of passion performing his work, and goes above and beyond to educate excavators, homeowners and other line locators about New Mexico Excavation Law and safe digging practices.”
The PNM Damage Prevention team works to help locate and mark underground lines in areas that are set to have excavation. New Mexico state law requires those involved in excavation to provide at least two working days’ notice to owners of underground facilities (utilities, communication companies, etc.) so those owners can locate and mark their lines to allow for safe digging.
“I was speechless,” said Brian. “I’m just doing my job. These contractors put their lives and livelihood in my hands and trust me to do the job carefully and accurately. Everyone deserves to go home safe to their families at the end of the day.”
The “Doug Weber Line Locator of the Year” award is an annual award that began 10 years ago to recognize locators who go above and beyond to prevent damages to utilities, and to educate excavators in New Mexico.
