Toni Erdmann directed by Maren Ade
The audaciously entertaining Toni Erdmann is an alternately hilarious and mortifying comedy following the fraught relationship between a repressed corporate consultant and her incessantly prank-playing father.
“Sensational. A work of great beauty, great feeling and great cinema.” – Manohla Dargis, New York Times
Workaholic corporate executive Ines (Sandra Hüller) does not, in the eyes of her fun-loving father Winfried (Peter Simonischek), enjoy life enough. At loose ends after the death of his old dog, Winfried decides to surprise her with an unannounced visit, which could hardly be worse-timed as he catches up with her in Bucharest at a crucial stage in important and delicate corporate negotiations. The geographical change doesn’t help the two to see more eye to eye. Practical joker Winfried loves to annoy his daughter with corny pranks, and disapproves of her high-powered lifestyle. Just when Ines thinks she has sent him back to Germany, she encounters flashy Toni Erdmann: Winfried’s outrageous alter ego. Disguised in a tacky suit, weird wig and even weirder fake teeth, Toni barges into Ines’ professional life, claiming to be her CEO’s life coach. As Toni, Winfried is bolder and doesn’t hold back, resulting in some hysterically funny contretemps. He’s impossible to ignore, and Ines begins to see her eccentric father in a new light.
