FROM THE ARTIST: I’ve shown work in New York, including NYC, Illinois, including Chicago, and Florida in the Clearwater, Tampa, St. Petersburg area. I call the hybrid process I use Photopainting. It begins with an abstract photograph, composition unmanipulated. Next some, all, or sometimes none of the compositional elements are digitally re-colored, a process which yields an image resembling a painting. The inspiration for this was the 25 years I spent going to galleries and museums while living in NYC. I was exposed to an astonishing variety of abstract art. Having been involved in painting and photography for longer than I care admit to, I’d always wished to create abstract images in as diverse a variety as I was exposed to in NY, but was unable to achieve that thru either painting or photography alone. One day it struck me that as I had already been taking abstract photos for years, to merge my photographic and painting experience. Viola, photopainting was born. The challenge of taking an abstract photo and figuring out how to create a painterly image, without manipulating the photo’s composition is endlessly exciting. I have no interest in repeating myself but rather prefer to keep exploring the possibilities of this process to create new and different abstract images.
