New Era Martial Arts Academy announces the grand opening of a second location in the Espanola Valley. The highly successful program out of Santa Fe, NM has prompted professor Tim Valdez to expand with hopes of reaching youth across New Mexico. Valdez, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, has studied under the mentorship of highly accomplished Alberto Crane of Gracie Barra Santa Fe, New Mexico Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães, Gracie Barra BH Brazil, Daniel and Igor Gracie of Renzo Gracie Academy, New York. When the highly-optimistic Santa Fe native realized his dreams of competing professionally had been shattered due to a freak neck injury, he gracefully changed his focus to coaching and mentoring youth in Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling for Santa Fe Public Schools. “Jiu-Jitsu changed my life, it taught me to never give up. I want to give back the knowledge that my heroes gave to me.” New Era, opened in 2011. During his journey teaching children, he met New Mexico State Licensed teacher, Melodie Montoya. While working with children together, the two fell in love. Valdez and Montoya, came together to form a New Era of childhood development. In the fall of 2014, New Era expanded into a highly successful Afterschool Academy. The program includes both physical and academic components. The main focus for both instructors is both confidence on the mat and confidence in the classroom. Valdez believes that the minute a person allows Jiu-Jitsu to touch their soul, they evolve spiritually, build confidence, and as a result become a better person. With New Mexico 49th on the list for education, this raises concerns for many families. With this in mind, Valdez and Montoya share the desire to inspire youth to break through those boundaries and achieve success. “We strive to foster stable and nurturing relationships because we feel this will help our children succeed in school. You can’t separate cognitive development from social emotional development. You can’t have one without the other.” Jiu-Jitsu can develop an emotional balance that is an important key to inner peace, harmony, leadership, responsibility, courage and other important moral values. As the end of the year approaches, owner Tim Valdez is encouraged with the growth and success of his school. He is eager to expand and help the “new era” of youth on the horizon.
