The art of Joel Nakamura is clearly concerned with the Fundamental Issues of Life. Sex, death, vegetables, seafood and cellular phones. The paintings are tribal, highly symbolic, it’s modern folk art with a bizarre urban edge. When teh village goes global, just about everything is part of Nakamura’s cultural and ephemeral stew. A concoction that Nakamura tosses together using images and ideas that strike him as as weird, iconic, funny or insane. This may seem rather chaotic at first glance, but if you stop to consider Nakamura’s influences, Japanese heritage, Southern California upbringing. A childhood roaming ancient and mysterious places. A head full of museum visits, words of Joseph Campbell and shows either narrated by or starring Leonard Nimoy…it all starts to make a kind of demented sense.
Award winning Santa Fe artist & author, Joel Nakamura is known for his unique style: a blend of folk art and sophisticated iconography rendered in a neo-primitive technique. He is chosen for many of his commissions for his knowledge of tribal art, mythology, and for his ability to convey stories and information in an intricate and engaging manner.
