Traditional Tinwork for Beginners Workshop

  • Artful Soul 227 Don Gaspar Avenue Santa Fe, NM, 87501 United States (map)

Step into the rich tradition of New Mexican tinwork with 5th-generation tinsmith Jason Younis y Delgado in this welcoming, hands-on workshop designed especially for beginners.
The class begins with a short introduction to the history and cultural roots of traditional tinwork, followed by a demonstration of the tools and techniques used by tinsmiths for generations. Jason will then guide you step-by-step as you learn to cut, punch, and shape tin using authentic methods.

During this 4-hour class, each participant will create two handcrafted pieces: a decorative ornament and a small tinwork mirror. Along the way you’ll gain an appreciation for this historic craft while discovering how satisfying it is to shape metal by hand.
No experience is necessary. All tools, materials, and instruction are provided, and you’ll leave with your finished pieces and the confidence to continue exploring the craft.

The class is limited to 14 students to allow for individual guidance.
Jason Younis y Delgado is an award-winning juried member of the Spanish Colonial Arts Society. He also teaches for Albuquerque’s Senior Arts Program and hosts the public access television show “New Mexican Tinsmith.”

For those who wish to continue working with tin after the workshop, select specialty tools and supplies will be available for purchase.
