Todd and the FoxTodd and the Fox bring their Norteño Mountain Folk Funk back to Rufina Tap Room on Friday, March 27.
Founded by Todd Eric Lovato and Erik Sawyer, the band is made up of a cast of strong New Mexico musicians: Brian Nelson on bass guitar (Glorieta Pines, Ninja Star), Bryan Highhill (Lumpy) on trumpet and keys, Sawyer on drums and percussion, and Lovato on electric banjo and guitar.
The band moves comfortably between playful and dark. Their songs carry humor and bite — stories about historical trauma and patriotism, red foxes, mental illness and genius, sordid foreign exchange trips gone wrong, the 1847 assassination of New Mexico Governor Bent, and anthropomorphic exotic cat dancers.
The grooves are steady, the arrangements tight, and the tone balances wit with weight.
On any given night, the band might also throw in a cover from Funkadelic, The Flaming Lips, Watchhouse, The Flamingos, Pink Floyd, Harry Nilsson, Gillian Welch, or others.
This show will introduce a handful of new songs and newly arranged material as the band prepares to record its forthcoming album later this year. Expect fresh energy, expanded textures, and the same sharp songwriting that defines the group’s sound.
Todd and the Fox have taken their music throughout the Southwest and as far as South Korea, building a reputation for focused, high-energy performances rooted in strong musicianship and clear storytelling. Todd Lovato is a five-time New Mexico Music Award winner. Music from Todd and the Fox is available on all major streaming platforms. Learn more at https://todd.world.
