Join the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe during Indian Market for a book talk on Sat., Aug. 16, 3 - 4 p.m. with author Martha A. Sandweiss about her book "The Girl in the Middle: A Recovered History of the American West."

In searching for the story of the figure at the center of an 1868 photograph, Sandweiss traces the lives of the people present at Fort Laramie: the photographer, US generals, the Lakota people, and Sophie Mousseau, whose lives were all entangled in struggles over the future of the American west after the Civil War.

Sandweiss will discuss this turbulent history in conversation with Hannah Abelbeck, NMHM curator of photographs and archival collections.
