Appearances Deceive: Embroideries by Policarpio Valencia

  • Muesum of International Folk Art 706 Camino Lejo Santa Fe, NM, 87505 United States (map)

Join us for a panel discussion in conjunction with the exhibition "Appearances Deceive: Embroideries by Policarpio Valencia," exploring themes of belonging and the practices of heritage arts in northern New Mexico.

Former New Mexico Poet Laureate Levi Romero opens the program with a poetry reading, followed by a facilitated conversation between weaver, colchera, and scholar Juanita Lavadie and Dr. Michael Trujillo, Associate Professor in American Studies and Chicana and Chicano Studies at the University of New Mexico. Together, they will examine the embroidery techniques Policarpio Valencia employed in his work and explore how his pieces reflect his experience in northern New Mexico in the early 1900s.
