“Readings,” opening this fall at KEEP Contemporary, is a group exhibition of four artists whose work has been inspired by the guiding wisdom, karmic narrative and spiritual symbolism of Tarot cards. Featured artists include guest curator and illustrator Elizabeth Leggett along with other notable illustrators and painters including Lee Moyer, Sienna Luna and Reiko Murakami Rice.
Exhibiting artists blend themes from Tarot with ideas from short stories, speculative fiction and fantasy writing in their own unique interpretation of the show’s theme. “Readings” opens with a reception on October 11th from 5-8pm.
Elizabeth Leggett (New Mexico) is a Hugo award-winning illustrator whose work focuses on soulful, human moments in time that combine ambiguous interpretation and curiosity with realism. For “Readings,” Leggett’s digital paintings blend the 22 Major Arcana cards from the Tarot deck with short stories by Ray Bradbury. This body of work represents a yearlong project for Leggett as she researched and aligned elements from Bradbury’s writing with the spiritual symbolism from each Major Arcana card.
Lee Moyer (Washington) is an illustrator and designer whose clients include Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Discovery Channel and more. His illustration work ranges “from the ridiculous to the sublime” and has been featured in Spectrum, Communication Arts and Design Graphics magazines, the Society of Illustrators, the Smithsonian Institution and more. For this exhibition, Moyer presents a series of illustrations in the style of Tarot cards but with imagery that represents notable science fiction writers including George R.R. Martin, Rod Serling and others.
Sienna Luna (New Mexico) is a local painter, illustrator and designer whose work recently graced the cover of the Santa Fe Reporter’s Best of Santa Fe issue. Luna’s intricate paintings and illustrations explore concepts of duality in humans, nature and art. She attended the New School for Arts & Academics in Arizona and currently lives in Santa Fe.
Reiko Murakami Rice (Massachusetts) also known as “Raqmo,” is a concept-based artist and illustrator specializing in fantasy and horror. Her work has been published in Spectrum, Infected by Art, ArtOrder Invitational: The Journal, Exposé, 2D Artist and more.
For “Readings,” Murakami Rice will present a series of graphite drawings that represent surreal narratives.
KEEP Contemporary is one of Santa Fe’s newest and most unconventional art spaces bringing fresh energy to the local art scene. Director Jared Antonio-Justo Trujillo is an artist and Santa Fe native who saw a niche that needed to be filled, inspiring him to create a platform for “new contemporary art.”
“I opened the gallery with the whole idea of giving voice to artists who don’t have one in a conservative art market,” says Trujillo, who now represents over 40 artists working in a wide range of mediums.
