CURRENTS 2022: CIRCUITS @ City Wide
Tickets
Jun 24 all-day

CURRENTS New Media is pleased to announce its annual art +
technology festival, CURRENTS 2022: CIRCUITS, from June 17-26th, 2022.

The festival marks its 13th year as an international new media exhibition with a return to a full-scale,citywide festival.

CURRENTS 2022 celebrates all the City Different has to offer with
locations at: the Santa Fe Fairgrounds, Center for Contemporary Art (CCA), Currents 826,
form & concept and SITE Santa Fe.

After two years of reduced scale, CURRENTS New Media is thrilled to expand the annual festival to new locations, exhibiting simultaneously at Southside and Downtown venues for the first time.

Over 70 artworks will be presented June 17-26th as part of the multi-venue festival across
Santa Fe: featuring work ranging from new media installation and sound performance,
to video works and augmented reality at CCA, The Santa Fe Fairgrounds, CURRENTS’
year-round gallery Currents 826, and partner venue form & concept.

Visitors to CCA will experience a wide range of new media work both inside the beautiful Tank Garage gallery and outside, with several open-air installations.

CURRENTS will also make use of CCA’s theaters, with four daily video programs and nightly performances.

At the Fairgrounds, visitors will experience creative and engaging new media works for the whole family.

The neighboring Rodeo de Santa Fe will coincide with the second half of the festival, running June 22nd- 25th.

All required COVID-19 precautions will be in place at each location.

CURRENTS is an initiative of Parallel Studios, a local nonprofit founded by Frank Ragano
and Mariannah Amster.

As curators, they have shown artworks at the intersection of art and technology by artists based regionally, nationally, and abroad for twenty years.

The result is a diverse, dynamic, and captivating exhibition that attracts a wide range of  both local and visiting audiences.

Each year the festival presents works that include a mix of interactive
and immersive installations, virtual and augmented reality, multimedia performances,
robotics, 3D printed work, video, sound art, and more.

It is thanks to CURRENTS’ many supporters and partners that this endeavor is possible.

Megan Cozens, of Durban, South Africa, smiles as Jozsua Martinez, of Taos, wears virtual reality goggles inside the GLOWpod exhibit Saturday (Sept. 15) during the 2018 PASEO in Kit Carson Park. The installation was created by The Social Media Workgroup of Albuquerque in collaboration with Red Willow Farm on Taos Pueblo and was described as “a space between a greenhouse of tomorrow and an extraterrestrial nursery.”

Parallel Studios is pleased to return to a full-sized festival through its expansion to
new locations.

This expansion allows Parallel Studios to support a wide range of artists
who create innovative works that offer the community a broad horizon of immersive art
experiences.

This year will be the 98th presentation of The Burning of Will Shuster’s Zozobra Santa Fe’s unique cultural celebration. Members of The Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe volunteer thousands of hours every year in preparation to make Zozobra a fun, family-friendly event but we always need help. Despite the pandemic necessitating a limited audience and affecting ticket sales, the net proceeds of Zozobra 2021 allowed Kiwanis to donate $25,000 to non-profits that aid Santa Fe’s underserved youth. Zozobra has also helped save 4,000 lives through Project ELIMINATE, the Kiwanis global campaign that partners with UNICEF to eliminate maternal/ neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the earth.

What To Wear While You Ride The Rails

Sky Railway recommends checking your daily weather report before coming out to ride our trains so that you can best decide how to dress.

Our historically restored trains are equipped with floor heaters for those cool Santa Fe nights and winters days, but you may want an extra layer just incase you decide to step out onto one of our open air flatcars.

Things heat up pretty quick during our summers here in the high desert. Our classic 1924 Pullman cars have windows that are open to let that clean mountain air cool you down. If you tend to overheat, we recommend booking our premium car with air-conditioning.

Close toe shoes with flat outer soles are suggested to keep your toes warm and for better balance moving around our train cars.

For further questions on what to wear, please contact us directly.

A SHORT HISTORY OF SKY RAILWAY
As Santa Fe became a curious and unique destination, the railroad carried into Santa Fe artists, tourists, wealthy eastern eccentrics, archaeologists, dreamers, and others seeking its unique mixture of cultures, mountains, fresh air, and exquisite light.
Many scientists who joined the Manhattan Project traveled incognito on the train, before being whisked up by car to the secret city of Los Alamos. Presidents rode the line, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

It is fair to say that without the Santa Fe Southern Railroad connection, Santa Fe would be a less exciting place. The railroad helped create the City Different.

In 2020, Sky Railway was born from the ashes of Santa Fe Southern. Prominent Santa Feans came together to save the historic, 141-year-old railroad.

They are Bill Banowsky; owner of Violet Crown Cinemas and a filmmaker; George RR Martin, the novelist, co-creator of Meow Wolf, and savior of the Jean Cocteau Theater.

They were joined by several others, including author Douglas Preston and artist Gary Oakley.

The group of train enthusiasts combined personal resources to revive the historic railroad and turn its purpose into delighting and entertaining Santa Fe locals, along with the town’s three million annual tourists with their Adventure Trains!

With a creative team led by George RR Martin, Sky Railway is developing a lineup of entertainment adventure rail trips that will make it one of the most original, imaginative, and exciting short-line railroads in the country, befitting the City Different.

“We need to be bold, wild, and exciting, with something different up our sleeve,” said George RR Martin, head of the creative development team. “In the long run, we need to try things that other railroads would never dare attempt.”

He added, “No one else has a wolf or dragon. We do. I hope we come up with a howl and a roar worthy of them.”

CURRENTS 2022: CIRCUITS @ City Wide
Tickets
Jun 25 all-day

Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs @ New Mexico History Museum
Tickets
Jun 25 @ 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

The New Mexico History Museum is pleased to present Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs, a photographic history of our state’s many hot springs.

This exhibition explores well-known resorts as well as lesser-known hot springs.

Ponce de Leon, Montezuma, and Faywood are a few among many areas whose history will be addressed.

The nearly 90 photographs range from the late 19th century through the 1980s and document the evolution of how many of these springs were used and developed.

Museum visitors will also see the stark change in how people dressed (or not) when they visited and enjoyed these hot springs.

New Mexico attracted many people seeking respite from tuberculosis and other ailments, and they typically frequented hot springs to aid in this relief.

Opening Friday, March 18, the exhibition runs until September 4, 2022.

Alicia M. Romero, Curator of the exhibition and NMHM’s Curator of Nuevomexicano/a History, explains, “Exploring the history of New Mexico’s vast hot springs provides us an opportunity to explore how land ownership, capitalism, and health tourism helped shape this natural phenomenon into a burgeoning business venture.”

Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs
New Mexico History Museum

The New Mexico History Museum sweeps across five centuries of stories that made the American West – from early Native inhabitants to Spanish colonists, Santa Fe Trail riders, outlaws, the railroad, artists, scientists, hippies and more.

This 96,000-square-foot building became the state’s newest museum in May 2009, joining its oldest, the 400-year-old Palace of the Governors (the nation’s oldest continuously occupied government building and a National Historic Landmark).

Born from the need for a state-of-the-art storage facility, the History Museum evolved into a first-class museum project, spurred by the national rethinking of the role history museums play in communities.

No longer attics or basements full of long-forgotten objects, they are now places that partner in education, civic engagement, and social change.

The History Museum strives to forge identity and community through an understanding of who we were as well as what we have become.

New Mexico’s confluence of cultures and individuals has molded the social, political, economic, artistic and spiritual nature of its communities.

Using dynamic technology, including computer interactives, films, oral histories and more, we give voice to generations of New Mexicans, inviting visitors to form personal bonds and engaging them in the museum’s interwoven storylines.

Few states have the time depth and cultural breadth of New Mexico.

Most people are taught that America’s colonial history began with the settlement of Jamestown, or when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

The History Museum provides another point of view, framing the story of America within a broader cultural perspective that recognizes contributions by Spanish, Mexican, Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache peoples.

Augmenting the museum’s 3½ levels of artifacts, photos, paintings, maps and more are vibrant lectures, hands-on workshops and performances that complement the museum experience.

In this museum, visitors become players in a “theater” of understanding – giving them an enhanced connection to stories that resonate with humanity, passion, and relevance.

Simply put, this museum is changing the way that Americans think about their national history.

The New Mexico Museum of Art is a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.
The Museum of Art is one of four state museums in Santa Fe, eight historic sites statewide, and the Office of Archaeological Studies that comprises the Museum of New Mexico System.

The Museum of New Mexico Foundation raises funds for Museum of Art exhibitions and educational programs.

When the New Mexico Museum of Art opened in 1917 it was the first building in the state dedicated to art.

Its galleries, reception areas and St. Francis auditorium were made by the people of New Mexico for the promotion of the state’s rich culture to visitors and locals alike.

The architects Isaac Hamilton and William Morris Rapp designed the building as an enlarged and modified version of the building they made for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego.

The style of the building, called Pueblo Revival, uses modern contruction materials made to look like the historic adobe churches found throughout the state’s Pueblos.

Throughout its century long history, the museum has grown and redefined itself to adapt to changes in art and museum practices.

The current name, The New Mexico Museum of Art, was adopted in 2007 to reflect the breadth of New Mexico art. Its previous name, “The Museum of Fine Arts” had been adopted in 1962.

Famed author, George R. R. Martin (Game of Thrones) has renovated and give life to the old train.
Here’s details from the man himself:

On December 3, right here in New Mexico, we will be opening the Sky between
Santa Fe and Lamy. Sky Railway, to be precise.
That’s the new name of the old Santa Fe Southern, the historic short-haul railroad originally build by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe back in the nineteenth century.
Largely moribund since 2012, the railway was acquired in 2020 by a group that included me, Bill Banowsky (founder of Magnolia Films and Violet Crown Cinemas), bestselling mystery author Douglas Preston, and five other prominent Santa Feans (Margaritas may have had something to do with our decision).
We’ve been busy ever since restoring and refurbishing the cars, repairing the tracks and tressels, replacing old seats, fixing broken windows, even installing a new engine into one of our old locomotives.
All of which took longer and cost more than we had originally anticipated… but hey, that’s pretty much always the case.
(I almost titled this post “I’ve been working on the railroad,” but my readers would have taken that the wrong way… and, anyway, it isn’t true. I am one of the owners.
Mostly what I have been doing is throwing out ideas and writing checks. Sky’s employees, an energetic and enthusiastic crew, have been doing the work, all those things I mentioned up above and lots more besides.
I have not driven a single spike, laid a single rail, reupholstered a seat, crawled under a coach to check the wheels, and I won’t be selling tickets or driving the trains either… though I do reserve the right to blow the whistle now and again. Nor have I been in the kitchen with Dinah. I have working, yes, yes… but not on the railroad.
I have been writing WINDS OF WINTER, editing three new Wild Cards books, sitting down with some amazing screenwriters and showrunners to create three hundred and seventeen new GAME OF THRONES successor shows for HBO and HBO Max, and serving as executive producer on various other television and film projects in various stages of development, including DARK WINDS for AMC, JOKERTOWN for Peacock, ROADMARKS and WHO FEARS DEATH for HBO.
Oh, and I was the executive producer on our (recently wrapped) short film of Howard Waldrop’s NIGHT OF THE COOTERS. So I have been working. Maybe too bloody hard, but that’s another tale for another blog post… though these days even finding the time to blog is hard).
But I digress. Let us get… ahem… back on track.
Santa Fe is the City Different, and we wanted Sky, the reborn Santa Fe Southern, to be the Railway Different. We had two big old diesel locomotives, so right off we decided we would run two trains: the Wolf and the Dragon.
And to paint them, and give each its own character and a look unlike any other train in the country, we hired Santa Fe’s own JORAEL NUMINA, an amazingly gifted muralist and graffiti artist.
You can check out Joerael’s own website at https://www.joerael.com/ He’s been climbing all over our trains for the best part of the last year, and we think he’s produced something extraordinary.**
