José Guadalupe Posada Show @ Albuquerque Museum
Tickets
Apr 20 @ 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
José Guadalupe Posada, Calavera Catrina

The José Guadalupe Posada Show celebrates one of Mexico’s most sought after artists was a printmaker, a common man who died a pauper, his body interred in an unmarked grave.

Yet, José Guadalupe Posada Show has reached his countrymen through perhaps more than 20,000 images documenting nearly every aspect of life. Posada’s satirical skeletons, or calaveras, have become the most iconic and celebrated of his work.

The exhibition recognizes Posada’s cultural contributions, which reflect the spirit of Mexican identity in his time and imparts a universal perspective extending well beyond the borders of his native Mexico.

As Mexico modernized in the late 19th century, its capital bustled with published materials to satisfy the growing metropolis and its budding middle class, intelligentsias, and thousands of new residents relocating from the countryside.

Employed by the visionary publisher Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, Posada created expressive images reflecting and informing the transitioning culture of Mexico City’s residents.

“Posada engaged with the visual language of the time,” says Curator of Art Josie Lopez, Ph.D. “Modernism was developing. Mexico City was becoming cosmopolitan, on par with Paris and London.”

Posada’s art lampooned: politicians, recorded vivid images of the Mexican Revolution, inspired Mexico’s famed Taller Grafica Popular to use art for social causes, helped the Cuban Revolution succeed, adorned concert tickets for the Grateful Dead, and today leaps to life annually as the skeletal images seen during Day of the Dead, so popular now there is even a Disney and Pixar film, Coco, that celebrates the holiday.

Yet Posada’s influence is rarely associated with his name, his true story virtually unknown.

In addition to José Guadalupe Posada: Legendary Printmaker of Mexico, Albuquerque Museum will present two other exhibitions this Winter that further the artistic narrative of Mexico: Luís Jiménez: Motion and Emotion (which opens January 16, 2021) and Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Mexican Modernism (which opens February 6, 2021).

Together, they provide an opportunity to explore how Mexican art responded to and shaped the political and creative identity of Mexico.

Each of these exhibitions include works by contemporary artists from the United States and Mexico such as Luís Jiménez, Esther Hernandez, and others who were looking to Posada and the Mexican modernists as groundbreaking examples who reshaped art and culture in a particular time and place.

José Guadalupe Posada Aguilar was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico, February 2, 1852, he died in Mexico City, Mexico, January 20, 1913.

José Guadalupe Posada was a Mexican artist who lived over one hundred years ago.

He worked as a lithographer, engraver and cartoonist or what might be termed a caricaturist because he made drawings that were later photographed for publications such as “Argos”, “Gil Blas’ or the “Biblioteca del Niño Mexicano” (Reference: Bonilla, personal communication).

He worked at a time when photo-mechanical technology was in its infancy but growing is use. Earlier in his career his images were mainly lithographs and engravings.

Posada’s images are among the most widely seen and his legacy perhaps the most influential of all Mexican artists yet his name has yet to achieve the level of recognition as that of artists such as: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo or Rufino Tamayo.

Various aspects of Posada’s story are contained in the digital format of this website including some of the latest historical research about Posada.

His art as contained in our collection, exhibitions, relevant links, documentary film information and merchandise.

From Posada’s famed Day of the Dead images, Chicano Art (Latinx Art), the Grateful Dead and social movement imagery, José Guadalupe Posada inspiring spirit is ever present.

Thanks to many fine scholars, as we learn more about Posada we revise and update what we learn and piece by piece a more complete story of his life emerges. For example, the original Monografía. Las obras de José Guadalupe Posada.

Grabador mexicano, published in 1930, among other errors, shows his birth year as 1851.

This date is still sometimes repeated in subsequent publications but, thanks to research efforts of Alejandro Topete del Valle, Posada’s birth year has been established as 1852 and also to his credit is much more detail about Posada’s family and early life in Aguascalientes.

Entreflamenco is a nonprofit organization with 501c3 charity status with cultural and educational purpose. The dance company was created and founded by Antonio Granjero in 1998 in Madrid, Spain, the company traveled throughout the Iberian peninsula being presented in places such as the Palau de la Musica de Barcelona, Festival de Verano de la Communidad de Madrid and Ciclos Culturales de Alcala de Henares (Madrid).

Later, the company has traveled throughout the United States and Central America performing in Houston Hobby Center (Houston, TX), Charline McCombs Empire Theatre (San Antonio, TX), Festival Flamenco de Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, CA) and Teatro National de Panama (Panama City, Panama)

The company debuted FLAMENCO PARA 4 ESTACIONES in the Sterling Houston Theatre in San Antonio, Texas. This production was recognized by the San Antonio Express News as the “The Best of Dance of 2009.” This production also was presented in association with the Pan American Dance Institute and New Mexico State University Dance Program at the Rio Grande Theatre in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Director Granjero was awarded a Choreography grant by the Artist Foundation of San Antonio for his excellence and for 2011 DEL SUR production. DEL SUR premiered in the Entreflamenco Dance Space in April 2011 in San Antonio with following performances throughout Texas and New Mexico. This production also received support from the Consulate General of Spain in Houston, Texas. Later during the same year Granjero’s first Santa Fe production season was presented by the Maria Benitez Institute of Spanish Arts and The Lodge at Santa Fe with the show FLAMENC@s.

In 2012, Entreflamenco was recognized for the second year consecutively by the Artist Foundation of San Antonio with a Choreography grant for the production AIRE. This award winning production sold out performances in San Antonio, Houston, Atlanta and New Orleans.

Granjero and Entreflamenco were presented in a second fall season of shows by the Institute of Spanish Arts and The Lodge at Santa Fe with the mentioned show.

In 2013 the company was the featured act at the Texas Food & Wine Summit in Buffalo Gap, TX, the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole, WY, the Uvalde Opera House in Uvalde, TX and their annual fall season of shows in San Antonio, TX and in Santa Fe, NM.

Antonio Granjero & EntreFlamenco began serving Santa Fe in 2011 with a fall season of shows and later was named the residence company to the Maria Benitez Cabaret at The Lodge at Santa Fe in 2014. Entreflamenco performed as the highlighted entertainment for The City of Santa Fe’s Mayor’s Benefit Gala where they helped Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Northern New Mexico raise $350,000.00.

Since that time the company has evolved, presenting nearly 90 performances annually.

Entreflamenco celebrated a partnership which was in part funded by the Texas Commission on the Arts with the Chinati Foundation where they presented performances at the Crowley Theatre in addition to working with the Marfa Independent School District where they served children’s summer programming Spanish Culture Immersion Program various years. They have been featured at the Gran Junction Symphony Series at the Avalon Theatre.

In 2017, they were recognized as one of the Mayor’s Arts Award to the City of Santa Fe along with other figures and entities such as George RR Martin and the Georgia O’ Keefe Museum.

In 2018, they headlined the Festival Flamenco de Montreal in Canada where they received raving reviews from acclaimed French dancer Agathe Beaudoin “ Exito absolute…”

Entreflamenco has toured in 2019 in between performance seasons in Philadelphia, Texas and Mexico, where they partnered with the Latin Ballet of Virginia and the City of Cozumel to celebrate the 500 years of the Spanish Discovery of San Miguel de Cozumel.

Their international profile as dance leaders not only speaks for itself in the flamenco panorama, but also is representative to the State of New Mexico, nationally and abroad.

The impact of their work reaches many individual on multiple levels: economically disadvantaged youths that benefit from the outreach programs, community goers or visitors alike that want to have a cultural enriching experience by visiting NM and attending an Entreflamenco performance, or a flamenco dance student that visits Santa Fe for the annual flamenco workshop to better understand the art form from the hand of dance masters from Spain.

Entreflamenco now operates nearly 100 performances per year at EL FLAMENCO DE SANTA FE with four distinct performance seasons while creating a new generation of youth dancers for the future of flamenco in Santa Fe.

El Flamenco 2021 Season is set to bring life back from Covid~

Download the VIP Tours App- for your personal butler and tour guide for the best Santa Fe has to offer.

The app features personalized historic tours and explore all the supreme sites at your convenience.

Spend as much time as you want exploring the historic site or the surrounding neighborhood without the hindrance of a tour guide on a set schedule.

Using the app on your smartphone, select a desired site and GPS yourself to the historic site that peaks your interest.

At the location, listen or read the informational story and view historic photos related to the site.
The App gets you outside for some exercise to explore and experience the history of Santa Fe in a fun and modern way with your family and friends.

You can also take advantage of some great deals we have with local businesses and restaurants throughout the City of Santa Fe.

What’s great about the app, is that you have all the information in your hands when you want it and need.

You can keep the tour on your phone as a reminder of your visit and/or simply delete when finished.

Our new gaming feature allows for the user to collect points by “checking in’ at location, playing the audio and sharing to social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).

Collected points will then allow users to collect or open coupons for local businesses in town based on the “discount or coupon value”.

The better the value the higher the points needed. Users can also purchase points to access the better discounts or coupons.

Each stop your sponsor we will use your logo as the “key” to collect when users get to each destination.

The 2021 Zozobra Art Contest
Tickets
Apr 21 all-day
The Number of the Beast Zozobra 80’s Decades Project

This is a call to all for the 2021 Zozobra Art Contest to grace our T-Shirts, Posters and other goodies for the public to own.

This year, 2021, will be the 97th presentation of The Burning of Will Shuster’s Zozobra, Santa Fe’s historic cultural celebration, organized annually by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization whose mission it is to help the children of New Mexico to learn, experience, dream, grow, succeed and thrive. The Kiwanis Club members volunteer thousands of hours every year to prepare for The Burning of Zozobra, and they will burn your gloom again on Friday, September 3, 2021.
Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a temporary halt to the Zozobra Decades Project, but it’s back for 2021 Zozobra Art Contest. Zozobra will celebrate 2021 in full-on 1980s style, and they invite you to get into your best Ferris Bueller mood and take a day off to create some great Zozobra art!
“Everyone in Santa Fe wants to be involved in Zozobra,” says Ray Sandoval, Zozobra Event Chair. “What better way is there than an art contest for New Mexico artists, the young and young at heart, to create their vision of Santa Fe’s favorite malcontent for our official 2021 adult and student posters and t-shirts. A panel of judges will tackle the difficult task of choosing the winning work, and we can’t wait to see what happens when Zozobra encounters New Mexico’s talent!”
