The Museum of Spanish Colonial Art is incredibly excited to be teaming up with The Española Lowrider Bike Club for the next exhibit. Last Spring, with funding provided by the Drug Enforcement Administration(DEA) and Operation Engage (DEA), Hands Across Cultures is in collaboration with The Española Lowrider Museum Coalition, 100% Rio Arriba, Connecting Our Voices, Drug Enforcement Administration and especially the Española YMCA Teen Center. The Española YMCA Teen Center hosted a group of a dozen children and teenagers to begin the process of building a lowrider bike. The youth were given a basic frame, and designed and built the bikes with a multitude of skilled, caring teachers and mentors. The teens learned valuable skills of fabrication, grinding, sanding and sculpture. They assisted in the overall assembly of the bikes and learned about color theory and pin striping. They also learned some drawing techniques and completed some very interesting Paños. Most importantly the teens were able to form relationships with their mentors and increase protective factors in their lives. The group produced 4 spectacular examples which will be on view along with a couple other examples of the art form.
