The romantic drama starring Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford about two people who fall in love despite their sharply different political views.

The Way We Were as its Valentine’s Day Big Screen Classic. The 1973 film was directed by Sydney Pollack—the screenplay by Arthur Laurents was based on his experiences with the House Un-American committee.

The story follows the difficult romance between Katie (Barbara Streisand), a Jewish political activist and Hubbell (Robert Redford) a carefree writer with no particular political bent. The two first meet in college; they meet again after World War II and marry. The couple creates a life together in California but struggle with the differences in their background and temperament. As the Hollywood blacklist grows, Katie’s political activism eventually threatens Hubbell’s reputation and creates a breaking point in their relationship.

A box office success, the film was nominated for several awards and won the Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Original Song for The Way We Were.
